The naked hypocrisy of Game Of Thrones’ nudity

Well, if you say so. Personally, I can’t remember a single postcoital conversation I’ve ever had wherein breasts were demurely kept hidden behind the sheets. T&A is not remotely artificial during a postcoital conversation IRL, only on TV shows that have to adhere to Broadcast Standards & Practices guidelines and FCC regulations.

DTMF? Seriously?

ITT: A lot of comments, most of them from people who have never read ASOIAF.

Those naked women who have non-speaking roles? They’re playing slaves. Slaves.

I think people see that George R. R. Martin quote,

You know, I’ve always considered women to be people

And just sort of assumed, you know, that all the sex, rape, etc. came from HBO. Bewbs, must be HBO pandering to dudebros! Well…yes, and no.

Leigh Alexander said it best:

Boobs on TV aren’t just boobs on TV at a time like this. Power structures are changing, so it’s not so surprising people would be drawn to a fantasy series about how power structures limit and exploit women—structures suddenly fragile in a fantasy world at war, ideologically and literally.

It’s the kind of thing that I feel rewarded by exploring instead of just talking about. You can be one of those people who calls “misogyny!” at the first sight of a naked woman on TV. Just as you can be one of those people—as I almost was—who sees Game of Thrones as just another sugary slice of fanservice.

Either way, you’d be missing out on something that’s not just a fascinating exercise in crossmedia storytelling, but probably has an under-addressed role in expressing our own culture’s quiet revolutions.

Meanwhile, the men of Westeros relax by heading to the House of Pleasure. The armies of the world leave a trail of rape in their wake. Nobles leave a trail of bastards in their wake. Oh, and there’s lots of gory violence, but that pales in comparison to the fact that there are non-speaking naked women roles, and that a society that seems to be Majipoor in the Dark Ages is a patriarchy.

Anyway, after all that, I honestly agree about the nudity/sex being largely gratuitous. The story could be told without ever seeing a boob, just as it could be told without ever seeing semi-accurate effects on sword battles.

That’s what I THOUGHT you meant and I fully agree. Some people in this thread are under the mistaken impression that you a) want men not to be find women attractive and b) were calling men who find naked ladies attractive “perverts”, often ignoring that you were quoting a producer and employing their language later in the piece for a particular point.

I’d like to think it’s spotlighting, showing how women negotiate a sexist society. But I’m sure plenty of people don’t agree with my assessment of it.

I can’t see it! Why can’t’ I see it?

Maybe Caroline Siede is a Snoop dog pseudonym?

Um… not in westeros? At least not officially. Jorah Mormont lost his position because he was slave trading… so women in brothels are not officially slaves, no matter how powerless. The books and show go out of the way to make the distinction, I think.

It’s not that the women on the show are naked, it’s that women are disproportionately naked for no reason other than some producer wants to reel in the male viewers… She even makes the distinction between the main characters the ones in the background who are literally props.

Also… kudos on the name!

We are invited in “About the Author” to visit the author’s twitter page. What’s the creepy part? That I actually did?

Here’s mine:

The asking for an address bit might be a good starting point.

(I’m fangirling over Dr. Bashir being Doran martell, actually).

PO box, much? Amazon wish list, maybe? No? Alien concepts?
As if I were really expecting an address of any kind, let alone a street address.

Obviously he should have offered to send rumchata.

It will probably show up before long. It’s just a gif from the Cadbury’s eyebrow ad.

Alien? Not at all. Take a deep breath. Sit back, relax and try not to be defensive. Now look at your comment from the perspective of someone who just stated they wished they hadn’t read the comments. (You posted that image of the twitter feed right?)

Well, she had singled out a comment from here and held it up for derision on her twitter feed. Is that okay?
