The Orange Pencil of Shame

Generally we get as many freebie edits as we want for the first 5 minutes that a post exists

but not always

example

I actually got this pencil at 3 minutes

It ticked over to 4 before I got the screenshot

It’s also based on size of the edit.

If you think about it a bit, the 5 minute editing grace period could be weaponized by unscrupulous folks, if it didn’t work the way it currently does.*

* the additional check for length of edit is about one year old.

Click the pencil to see what changed.

Sometimes the system itself will edit the post (such as to remove a quote of an entire post or to change an image link or something) and it will count as an edit and an “orange pencil of shame” even if you didn’t touch the post (which kinda sucks).

even when i make minor edits within the grace period i still generally add an “eta” below the last line of my comment because i think it’s important to keep it in the record.
