Damn, I remember those days. What the hell happened?
The usual.
Some are not so lucky …
I remember checking the coffee pot cam in 1993 or so. It seemed wild that I could use a camera to look into a breakroom on the other side of the planet. I would never have imagined at the time that the internet would grow into a mass surveillance device.
Let us not forget the Amazing Fish Cam, est. ca. 1994.
I think they ended with the birth of YouTube. Who was the guy with the camera in his hat who used to stream his whole life at a website but turned off when he was sleeping? He was on the West Coast of America IIRC maybe San Francisco?
“Our webcam is a throwback to the early days of the Internet when anyone could do anything,” Schwartz said.
I understand and agree with the general sentiment, but… pretty sure you can still have a webcam even now. Maybe not in the exact same spot, but it’s honestly not too surprising that the space eventually got claimed for other purposes over the course of a quarter century.
anyone can still do anything, but it’s not new and cool anymore and nobody cares
That’s merely a cynical (i.e.“thats just the way things are”) description of the commercialisation and control of the Internet by vertically integrated monopolies that buy anything that’s a threat to their attention grabbing.
Um, what? Are you talking to me?
I don’t think it’s Facebook’s fault that the Fog Cam is no longer popular
Why don’t we just say it’s your fault and call it a day.
