I’m not sure “deceased,” “killed,” or “slain” count as euphemisms.
After a few lazy failed attempts at the Silmarillion, I found that by reading it in reverse order, section by section, it made much more sense- the final chapters mention relations and other stuff that shows up directly in LOTR, so going backwards, you have a better sense of the connective tissue and character lineage, rather than starting at the abstract beginning of time…
