Also it’s worth noting that in Krupa Vs. Rich, Krupa looks and probably was actually happy. Rich was known for having a legendarily foul temper. Such is the range of artists, just like all people.
I thought I’d remembered reading that Jo Jones (born in 1909, like Krupa) could be… difficult, and that’s aside from the story about him flinging a cymbal at Charlie Parker. I can’t find the story about him online that I’m remembering, but I only mention it in the first place to say - in spite of how he might have behaved (or not) toward other people - how much Jones’ playing really made an impression on me. Not just the way he plays drums, but the sheer élan and confidence that he conveys (and, I’ll add, wearing a suit while doing so). When I first saw footage of him (this would be like 25 years after he’d died), I thought, “I really should approach everything that I do the way that Jo Jones plays music” (but, alas, I fall short). And I don’t think this is the clip I am looking for but it’ll do.
