My guess is that it is burning off fine hairs that stick out from the bulk of the synthetic yarn, which would require longer flame contact because of the lower ratio of surface in contact with oxygen.

Thought this might just be the trick you do with a butane lighter. Open the valve, run the lighter over the back of your hand or on your jacket sleeve, and then light it.

Wanna see me set flash paper on fire in my hand? No problem.
