I’ve never really seen the point of these. It’s not like books are such rare, precious treasures that people are going to be happy to read whatever random Danielle Steele novel someone abandons there.
Children’s books, maybe.
I use them to dump some of my books regularly. They are usually gone within the day, so can expect someone got some joy out of them. On the other hand, I rarely take something from the boxes, since the quality is… mixed, to put it mildly.
