@jlw I am curious: can the two books be read in reverse order?

Is it just me, or recent SF books are a bit too much about horrid future hellscapes? If science fiction is escapism, that’s exactly what I wish to escape from!

Science fiction has never been about escapism. It’s about the problems we have today.

ETA: so of course it’s all hellish dystopias

I think it’ll stand alone but may lose some oomph? A lot of sea of rust world building doesn’t get repeated in day zero
