Odd way to phrase it. Food is as essential as a place to live but we don’t say the corner grocer or the restaurant owner is extorting money by threatening people with starvation for not letting people take food without paying.

We should have a better safety net. But why landlords specifically are evil because we don’t is a strange notion.

Odd comparison. Corner grocers and restaurants don’t demand a deposit up front or withhold that money if there is any damage to goods.

No one expects groceries to be returned reasonably intact to be used by someone else.
