I seem to recall there are already cases where young people with diabetes make a deliberate decision to put their health at extreme risk by using their condition (e.g. by binging on high sugar foods) to induce extreme weight loss.

Yeah, treating young people like they all are equally capable of making intelligent and self actualized decisions starting at some mystical threshold age of maturity has always been problematic.
