Three things people in Finland—the "happiest country in the world"—apparently never do

SDP is center-left; more center than left, but still. Kokoomus is the worst case; they’ve abandoned the old Bildungsbürgertum ideas (“sivistysporvari”) and ended up being completely taken over by the pro-money elements.

Can you be center-left while banning strikes?

Oh and we are rude. We don’t have a word for “please”.

Oh and Jordan Peterson must love Finnish as we don’t have any of those gendered pronouns. We do have pronouns for old people (te = y’all). But that ruins my joke…

BTW I might have grey in my beard but I am not a te. Ever.

OT, but I had a fun moment recently with my ‘kids’ (adults) because we speak multiple languages and were joking around in French (or was it German?) and I used the vous form, was corrected (they’re my kids, thus informal), and had to remind them that since they add up to more than one, I still had to use the vouvoyer form. I got an “oh, duh!” from both of them!

Whereas our right-wing party would label your right-wing party - never mind any of your leftist parties - as “socialists” (if not “communists”). I look at the policies of some European parties that are directly descended from Nazis and realize they’re more progressive than the mainstream of our ostensible left-wing party…

European far-right parties very much approve of welfare as long as it goes to the right people. They believe that a successful welfare state is only possible in an ethnically homogeneous society.

You see, welfare has trouble in more diverse societies like the US because…well…racists keep trying to dismantle it. :frowning:

It’s an Overton window issue too - in states that have social services, which are broadly popular, any talk of not supporting them is so much more radical (and unpopular) than talk by American politicians denouncing the very idea (of something that only exists as an notion in straw man form for most US voters).

As someone who just finished a bag of salmiak licorice…

Foul is nicer than what I have heard some people call

But if you like black licorice you should really try it. It’s addictive. There is a range of saltiness (its ammonium not sodium chloride so the taste is “unique”) and some of the more extreme ones are an aquired tast among even afficianados. If you can find a good dutch shop there are plenty of milder varieties that offer just a little bit of interest over regular licorice.

Once you get hooked on the intro stuff we can start talking about the good stuff

If you drink alcohol, try Salmari, too!

Just don’t take the habit too far…

This was described in a reaction video as tasting like “trolley tears”.

EDIT: the word trolley in the above was auto-modified from a shorter one missing the -ey. ■■■■■!
