Yeah, French and Germans (especially Germans) feel fake praise is even more of an insult than just saying what you really think. Germans are especially famous for wanting to be as unambiguous as possible.

But only in Japan. You get a Japanese engineer working for an American company in the US, and suddenly it’s “Free speech” time: “No. He’s stupid and his work sucks.”

Ohmygosh, so true! If you have German guests over for dinner, DO NOT ask how they like the meal unless you are okay hearing the absolute truth. :joy:

Well, that’ll go a tiny way towards making up for the cognates that are way stronger in English.

  • big → grand
  • to ask → demander
  • please do not disturb → Ne pas deranger SVP
  • to calm → tranquilizer
  • to look → regarder

off the top of my head.
