The word “robot” comes from a Slavic word that means work, which is “rabota” in Russian.

And the root of “rabota/работа” is “rab/раб”, which means “slave” in Russian.

In South Africa, traffic lights are known as “robots”. This causes great confusion for visitors to the country, who expect to see robots when advised to “take a left at the next robot”, and then see only robots, programmed to do nothing more than switch from green to orange to red.
