Tokyo's "unmanned stores" - honor-system sheds where farmers sell their surplus produce

Every time you think of Stephen D. Levitt, I want you to think of this:

And every time you think of me, I want you to think of this:

A vegomorphic robot would be more appropriate.

They’re very common in the rural northwest too. One of our local farmers has an open access shed where he has a fridge full of eggs, greens and whatever. There’s a metal box for the money. It’s the original 24/7.

It’s found in VT too. My own parents sell surplus vegetables on the side of the road, with nothing more than a can to collect the money.

In the North, too. Eggs, flowers, pumpkins, potatoes, etc.

My favorite mom n’ pop dairy is like this. It’s up between Washburn and Ashland, Wi. Little shed by the barn where you put money in the box to pay for salty, squeaky cheese curds and some of the best ice cream sandwiches around!

There’s a little stand just outside of La Farge with the best strawberries, I think it’s near the top of the hill at UU? Every once in a while you can catch Zeek strolling down the road to collect the winnings and drop off more produce.

There are restaurants that do a variant of this as well… Here’s a Guardian article talking about them: Are pay-what-you-want restaurants a good idea? | Restaurants | The Guardian
