Sounds like you should read “Lamb: or the gospel according to Biff, Jesus’ childhood friend” (if I’m getting the title right) by Christopher Moore.
I hope you don’t know the author personally because I read the reviews and it sounded incredibly weak. But then, I find all attempts at “modernising” the Bible very weak.
I am not a personal friend of the author, no. It’s not even my favorite book of his. But it is good, and the plot is pretty much exactly what you are talking about.
I am sure Too Much Coffee Man (TMCM) and Trademark Copyright Man (TM©M) will want to weigh in on this. Wish I could find a link.
