2018 billion for two planes? Iâm not sure even solid gold would get you thereâŚ
ETA - rough estimation says a solid gold 747 would be worth $18bn in raw materials, and would presumably cost something to make. Still need over a hundred of them to justify that price, I suspect.
ETA² - thatâs the value of gold matching the weight of a normal 747, ignoring both goldâs much higher density and the fact that my hypothetical plane is solid gold. Gold matching the approximate volume of a 747 would weigh 1.9 teragrams and be worth, at approximately $50 per gram, nearly $200tn, making $2tn a veritable bargain.

I think itâs a copyediting typo, like, it was supposed to be âx-billion dollar contract from 2018â but something got mangled. Looks like the contract was ânot to exceed $4 billionâ, which still seems like a crapton of money for two planes built on a 50-year-old airframe.

Yeah, while searching for the weight of a 747, I saw this:
Suggests youâd struggle to make one cost more than $400m, so $4bn seems hugely inflated.

I know this is a tangent, but none of that really seems eccentric to me. Immature, absolutely. But itâs not like he seems to have some special interest in Babylonian art or horticulture or fossils or anything at allâŚitâs exactly the same empty gold and status symbols aesthetic that all the other dictators and billionaires have.
