OBTW, I read yesterday that a THIRD vehicle had ignored the signs and gotten wrecked in that same sinkhole on the road.

You’re not wrong.
It was a pretty small farming community for a really long time. The weather is hot AF in the summer and the winters are cold with ridiculous fog. Then right around the dot com boom, it turned into an ex-urb for the bay area. It’s still surrounded on all sides by farmland, but it sprawled quite a bit, same with Manteca to the east.
Interesting fact - it’s just down the hill from Altamont Speedway where the infamous concert was held in 1969.
