oh shit. i wonder if i should tell on my old boss who i was working “freelance” for but really was getting paid by the hour. water under the bridge at this point but the scheme is way too common. insane that a huge company like that thought they’d never get called out tho…
For their next trick, I think Uber should merge with WeWork.
Then Wuber could talk about having expanded their total addressable market to not only everyone and -thing that moves around, but also things in buildings. Plus, the combined operation could likely exploit several diseconomies to lose money even faster.
Won’t SOMEONE post Grumpy Cat so I can move on to another thread?
I believe the line is “In Jersey, anything’s legal so long as you don’t get caught.” Seems Uber got caught.
Wonder who gets to be Tweeter and who gets to be the Monkey Man?
Thanks, I needed that!
You, sir or madam, appear to be unafflicted by Hamilaria.
Uber needs to donate more to politicians.
NAIL THEM!
Nail the greedy bastards!
Make their wallets bleed!
They could be Uber Alles?
Uber shouldn’t think of themselves as being taxed, they should think of themselves as being disrupted. I hear disruption is really good for systems, and it’s what all the cool kids are doing.
Meanwhile, the employee / contractors have paid a lot of money in SE taxes etc. Will they get refunds from the IRS / NJ?
I imagine when Uber was being founded, the talks with the VCs went something like this:
“So we’re going to create an innovative ride-sharing company.”
“What exactly is innovative about getting paid to drive people around? Isn’t that just a taxi company?”
“Well we’re going to ignore both the taxi laws and the labor laws.”
“Take my check.”
“Then we’ll be sued. A lot. If we lose, execs and majority shareholders will get a nice payoff before we declare bankruptcy.”
Do you want self-driving office buildings? Because that’s how you get self-driving office buildings.
So, like, a slight uptick in money lost by Uber?
Really considering the economic advantage of simply ignoring the law, the surprising thing is that they are still losing money hand over fist. That requires almost as much incompetence as going bankrupt running a casino.
Oh, I’m not surprised. Sometimes, it’s by design. Why should owners and executives of “disruptors” care when they are paid ridiculous salaries and get a lot of tax breaks while the ship is sinking? By the time it goes under, they’ll be long gone.
