My softest cats love(d) getting filthy. So it seems to be with chinchillas also.
I once observed several sparrows dust-bathing underneath a bench outside of the L.A. Central Library. They were all hunkered down in the dirt and very energetically rubbing their undersides into it; they looked happy! A way of getting rid of parasites, perhaps.
It probably is, but very frustrating trait for indoor cats.
