Hopefully posting a human interest story isn’t a misuse of this thread, but I’m sure I’m not alone in needing some good news for a change…
I think we need all the good news we can get. I know I do.
A video of a chipmunk noshing on seeds. Just the ticket after a rough day.
Wah! It shrunk. Get a magnifying glass, because it’s so cute!

Just a reminder…The Far Side website launched today.
Woohoo!
I know that game. It’s called Nine Kitten Monte. Or Ten?
This actually happened to me yesterday morning.
I took my beloved dog to the vet for surgery. Afterward, I wasn’t quite ready to go home yet. Feeling the need for coffee, food, and a little down time, I headed to the nearest coney island for some breakfast. I was still teary-eyed when I sat down, but the Greek omelet, hash browns and toast had me feeling better.
When I was done, I asked for the bill, only to be told it was taken care of. There had to be some mistake, I thought.
There wasn’t. My waitress saw how down I was and decided to pay for my meal. She asked me about it, gave me a little hug, and told me, “Merry Christmas.”
I thanked her, and left quickly, before I could start crying again… and hopefully before she noticed I’d left the cost of the meal under my plate. I couldn’t let her spend her hard-earned money on me… but her incredible thoughtfulness and kindness is something I’m glad to hold on to (until I can get a chance to pay it forward myself.)
There seems to be a fair bit of “paying it forward” in the Metro this week. That was one heck of a sweet gesture on the waitress’ part, and super awesome of you to leave a “tip” behind.
(for those not familiar with Detroit, a coney is a general purpose diner that reliably has chili dogs and a smattering of Greek foods.)
How is this not a thing everywhere? This should be a thing everywhere.
That would be great! Spanakopita for everyone, OPAH!!
That’s super-weird… the top of the link says washington post, but the link itself is to the SF Gate?
Yep. When a story is interesting enough (and worthy of reporting nationally), news sources like SFGATE will carry stories from other sources like WP. It’s a way for me to read WP and NY Times online w/o having to have a subscription.
