Using pikes to confront and immobilize knife-wielding troublemakers

I used to see these in the Shanghai bus terminals and subway stations, especially after the sword attacks. They would be quite effective at keeping the sword-wielding assailant at bay.

I personally prefer the stopping power of a salmon.

Those are the simple “humane”-ish kind. Some have spikes and a barbed one-way catch.

Not sturdy at all. Site warns to be used for magic or dancing only.

I’m not sure if they could really handle Naked Florida Man with a Sword.

In Japan it is called a sasumata and the police still use them.

I wonder how they compare to … BANANAS!!!

(It always comes down to Monty Python, doesn’t it?)

That looked likd a drill. Knife dude looks a bit casual and non desperate.

The method also really requires a significant majority to maximize safety. One or two would be at increased risk of being flanked. Likely a factor where police patrol in small numbers.

Great solution if you outnumber the perp 8 to 1 and he only has a knife.

This seems like it would be a hit with the riot cops; who already lean pretty heavily toward ‘phalanx’ as it is.

I work in Japan and every school and preschool have sasumata and train the teachers in how to use them.

Yes, the Swiss used to be famous (and feared) as mercenaries during the early Modern period. So much so, that I believe some Napoleon-era peace treaty formally banned them from serving as mercs, except for the Papal Swiss guard (and maybe some other similar tightly defined exceptions?).
