Shit, I immediately thought that was his actual name.
So, obviously, not nominative determinism.
Anyway, Bob’s a fuckin’ terrible asshole of a person.
Why? Did he plead guilty? I thought in NV it’s usually you plead guilty you get life, you don’t, needle city, population you?
Anyways this hit me hard. Obviously, this was many years ago, but I’m pretty sure I met Jeff German at the Riviera years back during Defcon. A friend of mine suggested doing a “poker tournament” (which is a strong word for eight people throwing in a set amount, reminded me more of a home game with better table service)
One of the players mentioned they were a journalist, one of the other players gave them shit about how Defcon doesn’t like ppl w/o press badges, and I backed him up that we aren’t at Defcon til we go past badge check, we’re in public, so maybe don’t brag about all the ways you avoid tax in a public venue then make vague insinuations at someone who seems to be a local trying to cut you a break…
We spoke a bit, I mentioned I’d arrived too late in the day for an electronic badge, and he offered to trade since he just wanted to attend (as a private citizen, not as a journalist apparently?)
Again, I might be completely mistaken, but it looks like it’s the same guy. He said he was a journalist but doesn’t cover computers.
(This was back before cell phones got smart and when they’d eject you instantly if you started taking photos.)
Anyways, if it is him, he was nice. Told us to check out the peppermill, traded badges, eventually got knocked out of our game and left. Good table etiquitte, polite, welcoming – more than can be said for a lot of local grinders.
He won’t be Bob Democrat for a few years no matter how great prison reform gets. Don’t put your Sunshine guy in a wooden box!
Never heard about that kind of enhancement before. Seems a little bit weird to me that a premeditated murder of someone older than 60 is considered to be more egregious than the premeditated murder of someone in their 20s. All murders are very, very bad but on a purely rational basis, murdering younger people is taking away more potential years of life.
Edit to add:
My wording above was perhaps inartful. I don’t believe that a 20 year old’s life is worth more or less than that of a 60 year old, which is why this enhancment struck me as strange. That is all.
Murdering older people is destroying more lived experience. On a purely rational basis, which matters more? I would say the answer is that trying to rate human lives on a “rational basis” is invariably a moral disaster we shouldn’t do, and I assume if the sentence is more for killing senior citizens, it’s instead because they need more protection (as with hate crimes).
Weird flex for anyone to presume that certain kinds of human life are somehow more valuable than others.
