VHS is making a comeback

I know! apparently, they were back at the Plaza this past weekend showing It came from Outer Space as part of the science festival! I wish I’d known (although I ended up going to the AU game instead, as my friends had an extra ticket). Hopefully, they’ll do more soon! Although I don’t know if my 15 year old kid will like it nearly as much as the 10 year old kid did.

As for Dangerwoman, someone did a documentary on her a few years back - she was a regular at D*Con when we used to go:

Oh, you know what, I do know her, she used to do a drop for 88.5, Daaan-ger WO-MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNN!

I love our local heroes!

WABE did a story on her a while back!

GD Hipsters,
next you’ll be telling me vinyl is making a comeback (or, God forbid, cassettes)

Or, better yet, U-Matic.

I don’t think my (quite large) hometown has any video rental stores for even DVDs anymore. (Maybe the porn stores still rent.)

Nah, I donated all my U-Matic stuff, tapes and the last machine, to a private museum two or three years ago.
Well, museum is a bit of an overstatement. TBH, I know a guy who hordes obsolete tech. And looking at his, um, collection it is safe to say that any technology that ends up in his pile will never make a comeback.

Videodrome sails on, right there in midtown, in the midst of gentrification…

Also, there are still a bunch of blockbusters in Alaska, apparently:

Crazy!

A few years back, I was in the last Blockbuster in my city. I asked the guy working there if he was worried about his job. He claimed that since they were the only one left, naturally people from all over the city would flock to the store.

Vinyl has been coming back for about a decade. Ask some young hipster, they’ll have new vinyl of recent recordings.

I never got rid of my vinyl. I’m kinda pleased that I can purchase a stylus for my turntable, too, whenever that needs replacing again. There was a 15 year period where I wouldn’t have been able to buy a new stylus.

You know that episode of Cowboy Bebop where they are searching for a VCR system to play an outdated message in the future from VHS?

I have that on VHS, bought it in the past but I can’t watch it anymore because I can’t find a working VCR in the present. Is there a word for irony within irony?

I also have a lot of friends that are noise artists and they fucking insist sometimes on recording on cassette or minidisc or any number of other formats. Half of me gets the aesthetic and half of me wants to strangle them with the magnetic tape.

Um… it has been for a while. Hell they are even selling it in my local Barnes & Noble

But that’s too new. I’m waiting for them to bring back wax cylinders that’s where the high-fidelity is at :yum:

How many do you want? I stumble across VCR’s still hooked up to 50-inch flat screens all the time at work. (see the ketchup slices thread for a job description)

They’re still popular in the rural parts of Mexico, because you can get a truckload of Disney tapes for almost nothing, and the VCR slot is more tolerant of sticky, clumsy kid fingers than a rickety DVD tray.

I bought a fixer-upper hovel (that’s the polite term) in the early oughts, and bought a VCR/DVD player combo (Go Video). In both 2009 & 2010 my New Year’s Resolution was to quit cutting lumber in the living room. It took two tries to kick the habit. I gave the GoVideo about 6 months before sawdust and vibration killed it, but it’s still working!

Oh, dang! I just remembered that there’s a stand-up comedian complaining about how hard it is to get a VCR repaired these days.

Gotta go find a link…

Now that’s quite the euphemism!

Nope! I couldn’t find any links, but the gist of it was that it’s embarrassing to take a VCR in for repairs because the only people that do it are guys with a lot of porn on VHS.

Also, check out Kunail Nanjiani’s routine about ‘Porn Stuck in the VCR’
