Awesome mom! Glad she is able to go with her daughter to Hawai’i! (Me, on the other hand, cannot seem to think or plan beyond 2 or 3 days ahead, much less 13 or 14 years.)
I know that this is meant to be positive, but it just seems like the orphan crushing machine. The fact that it took the mom thirteen years to save $5665 is sad, not inspiring. Both that it took her that long to save, and that she thought it was best to keep it in dimes. I know that having dimes was the novelty and might have prevented the temptation of spending that money. But if they had opened a savings account, even with a minimal interest rate, they would have accrued a few hundred dollars in interest.
Earlier this week I brought down change I’ve been saving for like 15 years and was feeling pretty proud of that $333. Then I found out about this lady!
come on. a single mom working at a cafe. how much do you think is left after the bills were paid? she had an idea, she stuck to it and got her kid a gift she well deserved and will always remember. it’s a good story.
Interest bearing account of some type would have been better, but only slightly. Interest would’ve grown the amount by probably tens of dollars, as she didn’t start with the full $5665. And sadly, the interest rates for savings accounts from 2010 onwards have been abysmal.
(source, i don’t know how accurate this is)
My grandmother never spent a dime. Literally. She would save them in one of those old metal cigar tubes. Once she had the tube filled, she would go to the bank to deposit. By the time she was in her 80’s, she was so proud of herself that she was able to give each of her four grandchildren $10k.
I think all of her quarters went to the casinos.
True, but this is one reason why I prefer credit unions - better rates.
This made me laugh, thank you.
Sounds like something my grandmother would have done. She was quite a penny pincher for the most part. Both of them were frugal. But she did love to go to the casino and play nickel slots, which always confused me as a kid.
My in-laws are the same. They complain about the price of Burger King to my wife, but they’ll go to one of the Indian casinos in east county and play slots whenever they visit here.
I really hope they checked for any pre-1964 coins, made from silver and worth about $1.50.
Hey, happy birthday @Rusty_Blazenhoff !!! I hope this will be your best year evAr!
Mine was yesterday, fellow Gem!
I was trying to figure out why you thought it was my birthday and I learned that today is Boing Boing birthday! Today I am six
Wow. Was this a thing in the 30s? When my grandpa died he left behind a few cigar tubes filled with dimes. Maybe a Depression-era fad?
You know those cones you roll coins down where the coins roll in circles and then fall into the center? I’ve run a coin counting machine to count the coins in five of the 5 gallon buckets the coins fall into. It was a charity so we did it for free.
Took quite a while.
Oops! At least it was a nice oops
Yesterday was your cake day?
Enjoy!
Thanks for the greetings though!! Not that you’re keeping track but my actual birthday is 9/23 and “Rusty Blazenhoff’s” is on 1/23 (the day I legally changed my name in 2015)
