people seem to use steel wool for this on smaller projects. Lots of surface area seems to keep things from getting coated too fast. But you run out of steel wool and it borks whatever you’re de-rusting pretty bad. But there’s a notion there. Maybe drill lots of little holes in the hunk of heating tank?
