If she was trying to help him win, wouldn’t the best strategy be to guess actually helpful letters but neglect to try solving the puzzle even when it’s obvious?

Correct letter guesses are where the money is won. She would have “taken money off the board” if she correctly guessed any letters. She knew EXACTLY what she was doing. Trust her.
