I know some people who have something like a Christian commune in a great big house. Good people. They raise fish and vegetables.

That does sound like it describes a number of college housing arrangements. I had 2 housemates that stuck with me for 3 years of college, and 3 others that were part of the household off and on for at least 2 of the 3 years (one year we had 5, and it was a damn good year). It was a rather stable relationship, and worked well 98% of the time.
