Werner Herzog's answer to how many languages he can speak turns dark

I speak a few languages, and have taken some French, but I’m with Werner on that one.

That was my take…maybe whatever he said wasn’t well-received or understood.

WHY does he refuse to speak French? What could possibly motivate you to get shot in the head rather than speak it?

Being Werner Herzog? That’s enough of a reason.

I feel like we’re missing the fact that when he’s asked how many languages he speaks, he says “Not too many,” and then rattles off eight languages.

No Russian, so he’s некультурный (nekul’turnyy), uncultured.

This is also a Harmontown reference, btw.

That quote has haunted me for about 15 years, ever since watching Grizzly Man. I had decided to become an apostate then atheist (didn’t stick), and much of Werner’s narration, this quote particularly, steeled my resolve. I also read Camus’ The Stranger that year.
Cheerful jesters, Herzog and Camus.

To be fair that isn’t all too impressive. They are all closely related languages and he learned the basis for all of them (Latin and Greek) at school.

But then, only with a blaster pistol pointed to his head.
