Peter discussed issues like this at some length in his excellent novel Blindsight. I can’t recommend it highly enough, as long as you don’t mind being scared out of your wits by a hard SF novel.
He also has a cat who was forced to briefly share consciousness with a human in his novellette “The Colonel”, set in the Blindsight universe (and written partly to promote the sequel to Blindsight, Echopraxia):
