They also ask if you registered when you apply for a security clearance. Lots of high paying jobs require them.

Jimmy Carter did a solid and pardoned them in 1977.

My Dad got called up when doing a medical residency in 1970. My parents had a new baby, but the government didn’t care. My Dad said he met lots of guys who’d committed crimes and the judge made them enlist as punishment, or face jail.

Not that they’re actually leaders (their gran has done a good job of avoiding actual power), but both Prince William, and Prince Harry have served in the armed forces. William in the RAF (he still flies air ambulance helicopters) and Harry in the army (he served on the front line in Afghanistan).

My mum’s stepdad was a conscientious objector during WW2, so he became a medic.
