Was this a flaw in WhatsApp or a 3rd party library that didn’t get updated? 
(If latter other platforms may be ripe for picking)

It’s kind of horrifying to think a GIF could reveal your chat history an app that’s supposed to be one of the most secure. The more I read about online security issues like this one, the more I believe nothing is secure online at all. I wonder if a similar issue affected Signal.
This vulnerability seems to be in some of the code specific to WhatsApp (and any other program using the library) and not the underlying protocol. Signal seems to use a different library to handle gifs.
