And not just her!
And at the time, having a Russian who was trusted and respected on the bridge was also really ground-breaking, for political rather than racial reasons.
(Just trying to stick with the “white” theme. )
Gimme a black russian instead…I’m lactose intolerant!
Looking back on TOS, it was not perfect in how it dealt with issues of racism, but having a multi-ethnic cast that wasn’t generally speaking subjected to racist stereotypes was one of the things that Roddenberry insisted on and did right. And the subsequent series has carried on that tradition and gotten more representative and diverse.
Still do not like the Klingon revamp… Nope.
Agreed.
The characters were being controlled by aliens, but the actors and the show creators sure were like, “We’re putting an interracial kiss on TV and people don’t like it can fuck off.”
That’s a great excuse for a coconut milk White Russian! Yum!
Maybe the least subtle anti-racist episode of all shows of all time.
For the record, I know, and I don’t mean to deprecate it at all. The show was wonderfully progressive in a ton of ways and that was one. It just leaves me kind of sad that the first interracial kiss on television couldn’t have been consensual and romantic.
Tell me more!
There are people who don’t like the combination of coffee and coconut.
I am not one of those people.
Double bonus points if you swap in Malibu rum for the vodka.
All three of those things…
Gulping down a toasted coconut coffee as we type. Yup, 100% agree.
But that’s British TV! That hardly even counts as TV!
Shatner is in even earlier than Trek.
And, of course:
Michael Dorn’s role as an alien with heavy facial prosthetics really robbed Dorn of a rightful place in the history of smoking hot sex symbols.
