if it had been the incarnation of sullivan when i first noticed him around 1990-1992 that had written his opinion i would consider copying relevant extracts for you here. unfortunately he traveled the arc from “important opinion writer” to “glib bloviator” to “worthless blowhard” over the next two or three years. when he started publishing long defenses of charles murray and the bell curve i gave up on him.

You see me at a loss. In a German Nazi context, Volk and Rasse are different things – the Nordic people where considered of the same race, but of a different volk – but they aren’t orthogonal to each other.
While today’s meaning Das Deutsche Volk can be understood as “The part of the population sharing German citizenship”, in the racist context employed by the Nazis, people of the “wrong” race weren’t part of the Volk. Very much like “African-Americans and ‘real’ Americans”.

Pretty much all the white supremacist organizations in America—the KKK, the American Nazi Party and their Neo-Nazi kin, the Proud Boys, Aryan Nations, whatever those racist Viking wannabes are calling themselves now—are very explicitly anti-Jewish.
The amount of willful ignorance it takes to characterize antisemitism as a subset of “anti-whiteness” instead of a characteristic of “white supremacy” is just mind boggling.

Before this thread closes, I want to reiterate that Whoopi was not malicious in her comment, readily apologised, and it was not an “I’m sorry if anyone was offended” apology. And why is this important? Because if we get afraid of making mistakes and fear the shitstorm even if you are honestly contrite, then you get afraid to say anything at all.
She fucked up.
She knows she fucked up, and admits it. She didn’t double down.
I would like to forgive her, but I was not the one offended. But several Jewish authors I respect like Josh Marshall have forgiven her, so I take their word for it.

As someone with distant relatives who died in the Holocaust, I was somewhat offended by her comments, but I do forgive her. And I do hope that she will be forgiven by everyone else who was offended. Because she is a good person and she has shown that she is capable of learning and growing.

That’s basically what I said upthread, and I’m pretty twitchy about anti-Semitism. However, even twitchier than I am is The Jewish Chronicle, who have been at this a long time. They’ve come out with two opinion pieces on it, which won’t onebox, so:

i just wanted to note that for white, male opinion writers like sullivan, and stephens, and douthat, and richard (not even 500 people will die from covid) epstein have a glass floor. no matter how wrong they are media keep paying them to bloviate. as a class i would refer to them as hackasses*.

The only problem I have with Josh Kaplan’s idea is the possibility that speaking with survivors will do just about as much good as trying to talk sense into Megyn Kelly on national TV about why blackface is racist.
Judging from past incidents, I don’t think Whoopi is making any progress past this point, and I’m not sure she will. It’s incredibly disappointing, because the spoken word performances she was doing that first brought her to the public’s attention were extremely insightful into the patterns of racism, and nowadays I’m just SMDH.

As Greenbaum points out, what Goldberg suffers from is a warped view of race that is heavily influenced by the woke culture that has taken over normal discourse in the United States and other Western countries.
By belittling the Holocaust, what Goldberg has done is try to create a clear divide between white people and black people. If you are white, you are privileged. If you are black, you are not.
Yep. Because there was not a single division between Black and white in America prior to her statement…
I think her comment was certainly ignorant, but she apologized and learned something in the process. But to pretend like it’s her and “woke culture” that’s causing anti-semitism in America (rather than her ignorance being a byproduct of our very long history of racism, anti-semitism, and other forms of bigotry) is literally ignoring all of American history up to this point. He’s the author trying to tell us that Leo Frank wasn’t targeted by a lynch mob because he was Jewish? Or that the bombing of the synagogue in Atlanta in the 1950s wasn’t driven by the brave stance they took with regards to racism?

Having had more time away from the initial event and the suspension, I definitely stand by my belief that she wasn’t suspended because she said “the holocaust isn’t about race.” She was suspended because she said it was a white people thing. White people killin white people, so “that’s on all ya’ll.” She is suspended because her show is run and owned by white people, watched by white people ,paid for by white people advertisers, and she pissed off the white people.
Maybe, but I think it’s more likely she was suspended because the corporation she works for wants this potentially advertiser-scaring controversy to cool off, and then to shrivel up and blow away.
Suspending her for 2 weeks also allows said corporation to look like it’s doing the right thing, to whoever the hell objects to what she said, by punishing her.

I guess, but they didn’t react like this when Meghan McCain said far worse things. In fact, I don’t even recall those instances even getting much press, much less anyone suspended

People kind of expect McCain to say awful things, so it doesn’t make the news when it happens. It’s just another way that modern society rewards assholery, especially if you’re white

Indeed. We must fearlessly and successfully press a progressive agenda, while also not offending or frightening the GQP at all in any way. We must reach bipartisan concensus that the Republicans suck. And somehow, amazingly, the Repubs do not go along. Obviously it’s all our fault.
