Why "All Lives Matter" instead of "Black Lives Matter" is such a stupid thing to say

If you’re white and want to be part of the group: be in the chorus, not the conductor or one of the soloists standing at the front of the stage.

WOW! I guess you just miss my point.

I have no desire to “assume leadership.” Racism is a problem for ALL of us. I have no desire to minimize their suffering. I understand that people of color are killed more often by police. It’s obvious. I also don’t think they SHOULDN’T say “Black lives matter.” I am not responding to this phrase with the phrase “All lives matter.”

I just think that there is also a larger issue of police misconduct that affects us ALL and I think we should ALL work together on it. Why not join forces?

ALL Lives Matter! While no one knows exactly how many Americans die in
police custody each year, limited data gathered by the Bureau of Justice
Statistics starts to give some sense of scale: At least 4,813 people
died while in custody of local and state law enforcement between 2003
and 2009, according to the latest available report, published in 2011.
Sixty-one percent of those deaths were classified as homicides. the BJS
collects data on what it calls “arrest-related deaths” that occur either
during or shortly after police officers “engage in an arrest or
restraint process.” The agency reports that 41.7 percent of those who
were deemed to have been killed by police while in custody were white,
31.7 percent were black, and 20.3 percent were Hispanic. (Others died
from intoxication, suicide, or by accidental, natural, or unknown
causes.) This is the reason people say “All Lives Matter”. Because saying “Black Lives Matter” implies that more blacks die at the hands of police than whites. And that is not the case. The numbers I posted above can be found on the website of the Bureau for Justice Services. It is not implicit to a lot of people that there is a “Too” at the end of Black Lives Matter. The analogy in the article was not a good one. If the Dad who did not give any food to the daughter was the one who usually did not get any food, then his response is justified. But to dismiss everyone who misreads this slogan as being someone who is trying to stop the effort and draw attention away from it is part of the problem.

… 41% vs 31% ? Now, calculate for populations… 77% of US is white, 13% black…

Police kill black people at a -FAR HIGHER RATE= than white, and at a greater rate than hispanic.

Black Lives Matter implies that Black Lives Matter LESS to police/institutions/culture et al in the USA.

The numbers you found are not some sort of revelation, you just don’t understand how to read them.

You just joined and posted what is essentially nonsense. Your troll likelihood is very high.

No one missed your point. Your version of joining forces results in pushing aside the intent of black activists whether you like it or not, because you insist on this “inclusion” of ALL being greater than X.

Your version of joining forces results in co-opting -their- message.

If you can’t -just- support black activists when seeking to do so, get off their podium, get your own slogan that isn’t born of theirs.

You’d still be working toward the same goal, and more effectively, because you would not be inadvertently diminishing their efforts with your own.

So what’s the problem? If you can’t understand why black activists want to retain control of their movement, which includes but is distinct from your vision, if you don’t get how #AllLivesMatter and #BlackLivesMatter don’t mix without decidedly diminishing #BlackLivesMatter, why not do your own thing?

You may have no desire to assume leadership but demanding a movement which aims to serve a distinct cause conform to you is doing just that.

Hey I was simply stating why people react that way. I am on board with the problem at hand. I just think the problem is more widespread. To say I dont not know how to read percentages and calling me a “troll” does not help. A percentage is a percentage. It does not matter how many. i am not disagreeing with the cause at all. Just the way it was worded. Peace to all

Yes, but a ratio is also a ratio, and that is the key part your post misrepresented. There are a lot of data people here, and we keep ourselves honest (and accept when we have made mistakes).

Fair enough, but I did not make a mistake. Those are the only numbers we have. and I admit, they are 4 years old. I just think that when most people say “all Lives Matter”, they do so with a good heart. Like we are all created equal. I am sure some people say it to undermine the cause. I am NOT one of those people. I did not mean to sound that way. I just thought that there would be more unity in All Lives Matter. Truthfully, I did not know that saying that was misread by some people as undermining the cause. Peace.

40%/30% vs 70%/17% is a mistake, or a misdirection, or a less than honest argument.

I understand your arguments, but blacklivesmatter > alllivesmatter due to the simple reality that a black life is worth, what, 60% of a white life.

Listen, I’m sorry that you do not understand how percentages work. if something happens to 10 out of 20 people, that means it is more likely to happen to them than the 4 out of 10 group. I’m just saying that the problem may be more widespread than we think. You cannot make your own percentages using just what the media reports. It was not “less than honest”, and it was not an “argument”

Huh? Wait… Am I taking crazy pills or did you completely miss death ratios by race vs. Race population in the US?

I can walk you through the numbers if you’d like, but they mean a black person is twice as likely to die in police custody than a white person.

And I didn’t make my own percentages…
Have a good day.

41% is more than 31%

I am talking about in Police custody only.

Okay, one last then I am out.

41% of deaths are white. 31% are black.
17% of the population of the US is black.

Does that make sense?

Given this population, if you are black, you have a higher likelihood of dieing in custody than other colors.

This is how we data nerds uncover biases (like racism)

Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

You’re trying to frame it as “41% is more than 31%”, when it is more accurate to describe it as “If you’re black, you’re 4.5x more likely to have this happen to you.”

Yet it hurts some of us a lot more than others. Thus the slogan “Black Lives Matter.”

So you think that if #Blacklivesmatter is successful, the only ones that the popo are going to stop killing is black people?
