Why do most book covers have the same horrible abstract blob design?

As above, it’s more likely to be a spaceship. For low-grade crime novel shelf filler, it’s a picture of a woman in a red coat in some grim urban setting, or a man in a black coat, depending on the sex of the protagonist, along with title etc in ‘generic crime thriller’ typeface.
