Optima is nice. I use it a lot, as well as Palatino (which is also by Hermann Zapf). As a matter of fact I had the very good fortune, years ago, to be able to listen to a series of talks by Hermann Zapf on type design, which was fascinating – he used to live not far from here.
Professional-quality fonts usually have their price but they’re often well worth it; the results are much more satisfying, at least to people who care. People who can’t tell Arial from Helvetica don’t tend to care.
I am of the opinion that even people who are rather typeface-blind are not immune to a well-set text.
(Personally, I used Palatino for my thesis, and used LaTeX. If it didn’t help, it certainly didn’t do any damage.)
