Why is it so hard to separate art from the artist?

Once again:

Some people seem to believe that they are never wrong, sadly…

Here’s an alternate model. Humans may be apes, but we have a ton of special features beyond the patchy hair, and one is that we are really good at thinking. Once someone is committed to a bigoted world view, of course they can do the mental gymnastics necessary to keep it, because mental gymnastics come naturally to us. And a lot of people imbibe bigoted world views because they grow up in bigoted societies.

But there’s no reason to think any of that is inevitable except for learning and thinking. Indeed, I think there is good reason to think it’s not, which is that people are also really good at changing. There is very little of our lives here, spent typing at little screens and doing work that has nothing to do with collecting food, that would be comprehensible to the simple apes we started out as.

Unless one is actually adverse to any real societal change because the status quo suits them, personally. That’s a really strong motive…

Was just listening to some Lead Belly, turns out he was not really a nice guy, convicted of murder, attempted murder, in and out of prison for assaults and such. Seems like he occasionally got out not because he changed his ways but just for being so damned entertaining. Doubt anyone has ever not listened to his songs or performances because of this.
