Why self-driving cars look like "toasters"?

Car maker did cost-saving design choiches way back in the time, like the Fiat Panda

Or the Land Rover Defender

Expecially the Fiat Panda was meant to be a cheap city car, to make and to mantain.
And had a blocky appareance to maximize the space. Yes the first cheaper model with an air cooled 30HP engine was a bit lacking on performaces, and no modern day luxuires like the right mirror or the rear wiper were present.

While it might make access a design problem it is simple to change the configuration

I had a Panda. don’t exactly remember the exact hp, but I think it was the lower end. But because the car was so light, it wasn’t in any way underpowered and the short wheelbase made it quite agile.I loved some concepts of the car

The dashboard was one of my favorite things. Simple, yet immensly practical with the “glove compartment” basically being the full car width. I also installed my radio on the other side of the steering wheel, safe from picky passengers

It also had a sun roof, and the backseats where created in a way that you could simply roll them like a towel and thus transport really big stuff if needed.

But the love was unrequited. Fiat cut a view corners way too tight and I had tons of mechanical problems. Worst thing was that one day the lock of the engine bonnet broke and I was suddenly blinded at 80km/h (ca. 50 mp/h)
