For a short while when I was starting to get my degree, I attended the ITT … yeah, that one. Even a disreputable institution like that won’t accept Wikipedia as a valid citation. (Or at least non of the instructors I had would do so.) I do remember having to explain to some of the other students why it wasn’t considered a credible source, but then again I had to do that at a state college too.

Why would it want persons engaging in original research?!

Academics could write articles based on peer reviewed research. Wikipedia articles often quote some someone’s personal opinion that most experts agree with their theory.
