Fuck this.
Workers rights are human rights.
… Even in “robust democracies” workers’ demands “are overwhelmed by corporate lobbying operations, either in policymaking or the election in itself”, said Todd Brogan, director of campaigns and organizing at the ITUC.
“This is about power, who has it, and who sets the agenda. We know as trade unionists that unless we’re organized, the boss sets the agenda in the workplace, and we know as citizens in our countries that unless we’re organized and demanding responsive governments that actually meet the needs of people, it’s corporate power that’s going to set the agenda.
“They’re playing the long game, and it’s a game about shifting power away from democracy at every level into one where they’re not concerned about the effects on workers – they’re concerned about maximizing their influence and their extractive power and their profit,” added Brogan. “Now is the time for international and multi-sectoral strategies, because these are, in many cases, multinational corporations that are more powerful than states, and they have no democratic accountability whatsoever, except for workers organized.” …
Oh, this is so not going to fly.
How quick does Ipecac work? If I saw someone doing that I’d take a swig before answering the door and throw up on 'em.
Isn’t that a textbook example of human trafficking?
My street has a new sandwich shop and cafe, a new grocer’s selling organic food and really good bread, and an excellent coffee shop now. They’ve all popped up since the end of the lockdowns cos we’ve got more people working from home who can pop out for some bits at lunchtime, or who come to sit and have a coffee outside on their breaks.
The fast food franchises and the Starbucks and Costa up the road from my office in the CBD aren’t taking as much money? Boo fucking hoo (also the chippy next to work can get bent. It was awful, independent or not).
This, combined with our recent extreme weather, are going to make life… interesting. Politically, socially, logistically, economically.
Oh dear.
Well that was mercifully short, I hope the laborers got the fair wages they were after.
Also not gonna lie; it was shaping up to be pretty nerve-wracking watching how the timing might impact the election even if it made strategic sense for the workers.
I hope that Biden committing to not forcing the workers back to work helped them get what they needed.
The parking lot was already flooded, but the boss told him they’d have to get permission from their boss to let the workers go?!
Swissholes.
