Xitter to charge $1 to new users in identity verification play

For anything slightly dodgy on the internet where I think they might retain my card, I already use disposable cards (another Revolut user here). If I was inclined to sign up for Twitter (I’m not) I would definitely be using a disposable card with them.

Oh wow, it’s just a dumpster fire inside of a burning Tesla on Autopilot over there. I want to express my sincere thanks for all the people here who pushed me to abandon that noxious hellhole. Ew.

This is a now familiar situation of Elon being on the right problem with the wrong answer, usually whatever underbaked solution emerges from his 3am brain.

Identity verification is going to be an existential problem for any user generated content platform (ahem, boingboing comments too), as babble bots and AI spam are a basically unfixable problem using existing post-facto approaches. You have to start sorting known actors apart from spam, at the account level.

However, there’s an entire Internet waiting for the Twitter hammer to drop and “you have to pay now” is perfectly teed up to activate snark.

IIRC, I think when I signed up for Pillowfort (Yet Another social media platform) part of the sign up was a “registration fee” which was explained away as a throttling mechanism to both fund scale-up on the infrastructure, and to keep the flood of bot accounts out during the early post-beta period. It was more than a dollar (IIRC, it was something like 5 or 6 USD), which wasn’t all that bad.

I may have remembered it wrong, though- I’ve not actually used that platform in a year or three- I got an account on there mostly to reserve my usual and customary username on there.

Not that I’m trying to defend X- This is a stupid move on shitweasel’s part, and it will backfire on him just like all the other ‘brilliant’ ideas he’s had.

it is kind of ironic that anonymous block chain was supposed to be the thing of the future :tm: , and super genius himself was promoting it, and yet … when it comes to xitting, please whip out your bank credit card and give us your real identity ( so we can market to you )

and of course, by “ironic” i mean: can we please tax billionaires out of existence already?

They should accept the “X Coin” shitcoin that they are allowing to advertise using the X logo and photos of Elno.

Does this mean it’s probably right or does this mean it’s probably wrong?

All the Musk-following bots will be exempt, naturally.
