Yale history professor Timothy Snyder predicts the horrific aftermath of a Trump coup in 2024

No, but in some cases he brought his faith to bear on his political decisons…

The problem was that around that time a group of right wing prosperity gospel assholes decided to get into politics and became the “voice” of Evangelicalism. They backed Reagan instead of Carter, because they’re goal is an authoritarian Christian state, not a state that actually paid attention to the teachings of Jesus.

The greater concern about a military coup in the U.S. is a scenario in which the national situation gets so chaotic that the officer corps convinces itself that “temporarily” taking over is the only effective way left to defend the Constitutional order and preserve the Union in line with their oath. Based on what happened in other countries, that will mean the end of liberal democracy in the U.S. for at least a generation.

I’m not sure how likely that scenario is, but it’s a possible one.

As I said in the other thread:

I saw… they do claim that, though, because he’s a little D democrat and not an authoritarian bootlicker.

It won’t be just ‘4 more years’.
He will demand an extra 4 years to make up for the term he was cheated out of; and I wouldn’t be surprised if he demands [and gets] a Constitutional Convention to rewrite the thing so he can be POTUS for life & choose his successor.

Well, they won’t. Not voluntarily.
Pretty sure they never heard of the French Revolution, either.

They’ve had four years to figure it out… longer than that, taking Moscow Mitch’s derailment of Obama’s SCOTUS appointment into consideration.
If Those In Charge haven’t figured it out by now:man_facepalming:

They need to toot their own horn louder & repeat it incessantly.
If it works for the Big Lie, it ought to work for the Big Truth.

Well, so are million and more dead consumers. But let’s ignore that.

It wasn’t for that specific reason (i.e. enthroning Trump), but I’ve read of state-by-state efforts to lay the groundwork for this.

Arn Pearson, executive director of the progressive watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy, also warned that a so-called runaway convention could be called to consider one subject but then decide to make other big constitutional changes.

Republicans control 60 percent of the state legislative chambers, potentially giving them a numerical advantage in selecting who would be delegates.

The warning lights have been flashing in America for a long time. We could start in 1619 or 1789 and jump forward 200 years to Lee Atwater, Ronald Reagan, and Rush Limbaugh, for instance. What I saw in the Balkans makes me think the emergence of Fox News in 1996 was the trigger mechanism for our current predicament. It’s hard to overstate the necessity, if your goal is national madness, of mainstreaming racism and hatred — a function that was fulfilled by Radio Television of Serbia before the Bosnia war.

Never felt safer to be an American living in Germany after reading this. Can one of ya’ll tell me when my 401k is converted into Trumpbucks and I need to start pan handling over here? K, thanks!

Or Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines in Rwanda. And of course Goebbels made sure that many of these were distributed to the public for free.

Rupert is in some fine company, for sure.

He also doesn’t not have it. There are enough people in the military with punisher skull patches on their uniforms. Trusting an institution that recruits heavily from the exact demographics most likely to support Trump isn’t a safe bet, even if the officer class may have more nuanced views. And even among those, I mean:

I liked the King of the Hill episode in which Bobby assumed that the humble peacemaking carpenter with J.C. embroidered on his overalls was the other guy.

44 B.C., Roman Republic, after the assassination of Caesar - Mark Antony and Octavian on one side, Brutus, Cassius on the other. It did not go well.

Way agree. Even though I like to help myself stay chill by reminding myself of that nuanced officer view, I think the enormous reality of the enlisted-to-mercenary pipeline should also give pause. Mercenaries who already favor the punisher logo set, if they aren’t already supporting it.

Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.

Those who do remember history are condemned to watch while everyone else repeats it.

Good lord, people. Do all of you actually think I’m advocating for another trump term? Or that I think it’s best case scenario?

All I’m saying is that without significant election reform, we are screwed and I’m not convinced the republic won’t fall if he legitimately loses. People are seriously deranged right now and they’re taking power at the local and state levels. That will result in real, coordinated and possible militaristic violence that could unravel everything overnight.

I’m not a god that can will things into existence just by saying them. I’m just some nobody commenter on a web forum who has a long history of calling out fascists like trump.

The fact is that if the Senate doesn’t act now, we are fucked and no one can authoritatively say that option a is better than option b.

With apologies to @Doctor_Faustus, not necessarily responding to you; yours is just the latest response.

It could have been much worse. Luckily, Rome’s nukes were closely distributed across both factions to preserve a detente between them, as well as with the fledgling nuclear power of the Picts…

I wish I believed there was a reliable safe haven elsewhere if things get really bad here. If the US is destabilized, I think the chances of global conflict go up significantly. Living abroad may become precarious if anti-American sentiment grows in the wake of the chaos. We treated refugees and immigrants terribly especially during previous administration–kicked tons of people out without good cause. If things go sideways I could see that happening in other nations to people from here for a myriad of reasons: retaliation, security concerns, etc.

If you feel that corporate donations have too much influence over congress (as I do), then some of this may be determined by if they (corporations) have the foresight to see that the fall of the Republic would harm business. And do they believe they can control the politics of the New U.S. (Gilead?) or will they caution their congress-critters to preserve the Republic against tRumpism?

What would be the economic impact within China of losing 19% of its export revenue? Japan, China, and the UK own almost $3 trillion in U.S. treasury securities, which would be wiped out. Russian billionaires own a lot of real estate in the U.S… What foresight and influence do they have?

The profit is in distraction, not destruction – make people feel there is uncertainty, buy our security products and guns, buy that television wall now, increase the military budget, etc…

That’s a pretty dated perception of the US military. The demographics are more diverse than the population overall. Women make up 20% of members of the military.

ETA: and Flynn is widely despised by active-duty military. Only 45’s intervention kept him out of prison.
