Yale history professor Timothy Snyder predicts the horrific aftermath of a Trump coup in 2024

Understandable, but also all the more reason we can’t shrink from the challenge facing us. If things go south there won’t be anywhere to run to.

It’s perhaps not a coincidence that the other big English-speaking democracy on the other side of the Atlantic is also disintegrating because right-wing politicians have reached the endgame of destroying the country. The same know-nothing, xenophobic, lying politics that underlie the modern Republicans have eaten the heart of UK politics - and there are even fewer constitutional protections than in the US.

Scotland and Northern Ireland* are both inching towards new settlements that don’t rely on London, and the country as a whole has become more inward looking as trade, cultural and political links with Europe either.

So we could be seeing two nuclear-tipped democracies collapsing in our life times.

  • not getting as much attention as it should - in the near future Sinn Fein could be in power both in Stormont and Dublin, at which point who knows what will happen.

Same here; been hearing about this since the Clinton Administration, so it predates You Know Who.
I don’t doubt that one or another of his Wormtongues would suggest it to him.

Apparently, Flynn could be called back to active duty, then court-martialed & dealt with that way.

The way he runs around in-uniform for rallies and speeches, there would be ample justification, too. He’s not just some retiree; he actively uses his uniform to lend him credibility that he otherwise would not come close to having.

To me, that sentence, right there, summarizes what’s been happening in Ethiopia for the past 2-4 years. (Really, most of that paragraph is applicable, but that one got me)

Corporations have a history of siding with conservative and even fascist interests. Having a tightly controlled population is a net win for corporations, who would like a population that they can easily control with no pushback from anyone.

Except for all those profitable wars, of course and all that rebuilding after a war… creative destruction has more than one meaning after all.

We put human beings above markets, or we’re fucked. You can not assume that corporations, hell bent on maximizing profits over human lives, will be able to be reasoned with. Trump, much like Hitler, was the logical outcome of that mind set.

TLDR, corporations will not save us as they can make a profit out of any sort of situation, more so when they don’t have to worry about the rights of man…

Yep. It’s fucked. They’ve sold off the rights of the British citizens for some short term gain.

Really? Got any articles on that. I’ve been trying to stay up to date on the NI stuff, but have not done as well as I should like on that front.

i came to that conclusion some years back which is why i invariably refer to them with the words “death cult” in the reference. they are really and truly a death cult and shying away from recognizing that is just allowing them validation they don’t deserve. even the republicans who fight against the influence of the maga and q-ist parts of the party are still part of the larger death cult. mitt romney, adam kinzinger and liz cheney are still evil. they may be lawful rather than chaotic evil but at the end of the day they are still evil.

I’m sure they exist, but many are also familiar with this quote from a Canadian guy, or at least know the vibe:

One of the most satisfying things about the last four years to so is. that the “It could never happen here in the US” crowd commenting about democracy failing in Weimar Germany, Italy turning facist, and many, many other historic examples is getting every so smaller.

Of course, it’s also one of the most terrifying things about the last four years.

And the next.

No problem, here’s a good summary.

The reasons for their rise are different on either side of the border - in the North it is partly down to a split in the Unionist vote which means the DUP is losing votes to even more extreme parties, leaving Sinn Fein the largest party by default. And that could happen in the next few months as the DUP continues to act against the interests of Northern zIreland (and inexplicably continues to have a hold over policy in London).

Meanwhile, the Republic, it is dissatisfaction with the two big parties who have failed to bring the benefits of Ireland’s economic boom to large parts of the population and a clever decision to woo the new middle class that are attracting people to SF.

If there’s one thing that will never get one a timeout on this site for not being cool, it’s following the example of Leonard Cohen.

linguistics matter, “BALANCE THE COURT!”.

Can we stop doing this. It’s just a fucking silencing tactic. Stop telling others how to fucking express themselves.

Politics of respectability will get us no where. They don’t’ give a shit if we use this phrase or that, they just want to take over the fucking country.
