Isn’t SQL Server Sybase? It’s been ages since I’ve had to use it, so I don’t remember offhand if that’s what it’s derived from.

I’ve heard that, as well, but since (IME) Sybase was run via a command line (ok, shell) and SQL via a GUI, I can’t even put them in the same part of my head for any kind of comparison…

Because rent-seeking is the one true way to make all the money, we’ve managed to find a way to insert ourselves into and profit from other people’s wholesale theft of IP.
It’s almost like you can’t make money from actually making new things, because there are entire industries devoted to stealing it from you and selling it back to you with a markup for all the metaparasitic industries which have been invented to insert themselves in the process like ichneumon wasps, only not as pleasant or useful.
