I love Elif Batuman, though pieces like this make me feel uncultuired.

OFFS…

Gotta admit, I am torn on this one. On the one hand, there is no redeeming social value for kiddie porn, real or virtual. On the other, “Protect the Children” has a history of being used to promote way too many despicable acts. Also, the hypothesis that viewing porn increases the appetite for increasingly abhorrent acts is questionable at best. But, in the final analysis, neither I nor anyone I know will ever be comfortable defending the manufacture of CSAM in any way shape or form. I hate this timeline for making this a thing.

Though the existence of illegal distribution infrastructure increases the likelihood of it expanding into providing more than just virtual product.

One additional factor I thought of. As good as AI is getting, how can the “real” be differentiated from the AI? Could be the ultimate defense. “They told me it was AI generated!” Yeah, I can’t defend this, but I fear where the laws go. Way too easy to see it used to eliminate trans, gay, etc media (not even talking about porn) in the interest of “defending the kids.”

That’s just the thumbnail he chose to use. The video was a clip from a stream he did.

I think I’d be okay with one that could accurately summarize the video.
