LOL! Yes it was a bit of understatement on my part. I will say that Ran is far superior to every other filmed version of King Lear I could think of (King of Texas, One Thousand Acres, My Kingdom, Olivier’s version for the BBC with Diana Rigg and John Hurt).
I like Kurosawa’s “Samurai Shakespeare” but I don’t think its his best work. Of course even mediocre Kurosawa is better than the best efforts of many other directors.
