It would be pointless to transmit everything the mic picks up. It serves no purpose. If it were transmitting all the time, there would be no need for cue words, or an activation button. Just because you don’t comprehend the logic behind the technology, doesn’t automatically make it evil. And, of course, since this is going over the local wi-fi, it’s pretty trivial to check if the TV is streaming data just because someone is talking.

It is also a good way to check if the TV is not hacked and streaming data to some adversary.
Anything with a microphone and connectivity can be used as a potential bug (or “remote acoustic telemetry”).
