Analog ASCII portraits of famous writers

Would love to see one of these of Thomas Pynchon.

In what sense are these “ASCII” portraits when they were made with a typewriter?

Or how are they “analog,” when they’re clearly composed of a limited set of symbols aligned at discrete points?

The artist’s page calls them “Typewritten Portraits” - the change in titling occurred here at BB.
