Exotic caterpillars and the beautiful winged insects they become

When I was a kid my mother would send me out to the garden to pick hornworms off her tomato plants. She now regrets that, and has become an avid butterfly gardener. She even discourages her neighbors from removing caterpillars from their plants.

Looking at these pictures it’s not hard to see why she had a change of heart.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Vapourer moth- they have fantastic looking caterpillars which turn into rather dull moths. The female in particular is a wingless grey blob.

When I was about 10 years old, my brother and I found one of these guys at our yard.

My brother and I built a cage for it, but it disappeared and it was a little disturbing knowing it was on the loose. It was a big guy - about 4 inches long and an inch in diameter.

That was the COOLEST bug ever!
