My favorite bit of ancient stupidity is that Aristotle wrote that flies had 4 legs and people believed that unquestioned for a millennium. Yes, spontaneous generation of geese from trees or maggots from meat seems silly, but at least they had some observations to support them -- saying flies have four legs is just sloppy observation. Look at a fly. Count the legs. Not four.
count again! Flies have four legs and two arms, or do you clean your head with your feet ?
Except Aristotle never said flies had four legs the way we use those terms; a less superficial look at what he wrote on the subject finds it entirely reasonable.
